I mentioned earlier that I’ve gone all the stages from unmarried, married, divorced and remarried, and the same has God. No, I’m not going to compare myself to God, but we can still compare us with parables and stories of and from God. There are many stories and parables in the Bible, where some stories may be more personal for us, all according to the situation we are in, but all the stories in the Bible are personal for God. One of it I think are the most personal stories of God is when he is forced to divorce Israel … Continue reading MDR 12 – God – A Divorced Man
We have actually reach 9 parts of the MDR series, and the 10th is coming here. It means we have covered some ground, both of matrimonial contract and divorce. What I see we haven’t cover so much is remarriage, as we now are going to take a closer look at, what the Bible is telling us about this question. Let me first put some light on some peoples mind and thoughts of what they use to come around this questions about remarriage. Continue reading MDR 10 – About Remarriage in The Bible pt.I
In MDR7 we started to undress the myth that marriage had a lifetime warranty, and we looked into 4 places in the Bible who seem to support this view; Mat.19: 6, Mat. 19: 9, Mat. 19: 5-6 and Eph. 5:32. I also said that there are two (2) passages that seem to support that only death can end marriage. These is what we are going to deal with in this post, which is slightly shorter than previous one we’ve been through in the past (a relief for some :))
This two text that seem to speak about that only death could end marriage, is taken from the Rom. 7 and 1. Cor. 7. This texts actually does not mention divorce at all, but they talk about it anyway. ??? How is it possible to talk about something that is not mentioned? Continue reading MDR 8 – Till Death Us Do Part
In MDR4 we discussed the core issue Pharisees and Jesus discussed, – Hillel’s teaching about ‘any cause’-divorce. Since we now already are in Mat. 19, I really want to take some of the points and teaching Jesus do here, about marriage in their discussion.
It may be that Jesus tried to ignore the Pharisees question, and focuses on what is more important, namely the actual marriage. Whatever, He brings Pharisees question to a much wider perspective, and in that way show them God’s meaning of the marriage itself, but also point out their misinterpretation of the law(s). Continue reading MDR 5 – Jesu’s Teaching in Mat. 19:3-12
In these “electronic days”, some have discovered new avenues for divorce, for example a man from Dubai who divorced from his wife through sms. In Islamic Sharia law, it is possible to be divorced by either orally or bytext saying – “I divorce you” – three times, and no other reason is needed to be given. This opportunity is only for men and not for women. This not only seems to be a simple and unfair way to divorce, but in fact is. We wouldn’t find any of this kind of simple divorce-practice in the Bible … or? Actually, we can find an equally simple practice being used and discussed in the Bible too! Continue reading MDR 4 – Divorce By Any Cause
Have you heard the one about Adam and his rib? Well, as you probably know, in the beginning God created Adam and put him in Paradise. Adam was allowed to take part in all the joys and wonders that were in the Garden of Eden, and he was given a job to naming all the animals. But after he had named the animals – ever so long and big task – he went tired and wanted some company. Someone who he could talk with and impress. God understood his situation very well and said: “I can see you’re lonely. Let me create a woman for you.”
Here comes second and final story that I use as a intro to MDR, and to bring some light on some of the issues and problems we may encounter on this topic. Let us not dwell but go straight on to the last stories.
I was in a pleasant and lively social boy-gathering… well it was not a big gathering, but we were 5 good mates gathered home of one of them. I had not seen them for three years and we had not much information about each other of these three years, therefore, there were many stories to exchanged. He who owned the house, Erik, was a good artisan and had built his house himself. A great and lovely house and I admired him for the work he had put on this house and elsewhere in his life. – Wife, children, house and car, and already now without debt. Yes a great career as artisan he had. It was like just one way for him, upwards and forward.
MDR stands for Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage. A shortcut I choose to use on this series where I deal with many christians problems of the questions of marriage, divorce and remarriage. It also make a search easier. Make a search on MDR and read all about this topics.
For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel,
And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. (Mal. 2:16, Mat. 19:9 NASB)
I have long time wanted to write a bit about some difficult topic – marriage, divorce and remarriage. Not only Christian and in a Biblical context, but I’m sure all may have huge benefit of this series. We don’t really find the difficult questions in the group of marriage, but for sure we find may difficult question in the group of divorce and remarriage. The topic of marriage can not be let out, because it’s where all starts. I have a big faith that we can avoid many problems even before we goes to the step of marriage by get more fully understanding what a marriage is. Yet, I have been concentrated around the topic of divorce and remarriage at first, then I will come back to the topic of marriage another time. …go and read!
